Opening Statement by Irma "Citlamina" Muniz
First Mexika National Conference

August 13, 2000.

"We are not Democrats, we are not Republicans.
We are the party of the Sixth Sun."

Hermanos, bienvenidos to the first Mexika National Conference of the 21st Century. This conference is a testament to 500 years of resistance to repression. Today, we recognize our strength and determination to preserve our culture, history, land, and ancient divine spirituality.

It is evident that we who are gathered here have come from the Four Directions that will eventually journey into the realm of diversity and Mexicayotl. Let us embrace and share with the world, and with our people in Aztlan, that the time has come for us who are destined to carry out the prophecies of our ancient ancestors, leaders, and heroes.

It is written in our ancient writings that no one will do for us what we fail to do for ourselves. This conference will provide, for us who live oppressed in Aztlan, the moral responsibility and duty of bringing to a close, once and for all, what Zapata, Villa, Ricardo Flores Magon, Cesar Chavez, and Cuauhtemoc bequeathed to us -- the duty to protect our liberty, our land, and to struggle for the essence of justice as we build the Nation of Aztlan within another nation.

Yes, the day and time has come. Nothing will prevent this -- for there is nothing on earth that is more powerful than the moral power of truth. And the truth about our culture, of our history, and of our land has almost been totally destroyed by the Oppressor. The historical, ancient truth of our past, and now our present, shall set our people free in the future.

During this conference, speakers, workshop leaders, professors all will provide for us how the secret knowledge and wisdom of the Sixth Sun was bestowed upon our ancestors and how they are intertwined into the fabric of life. It has brought us to this Day of Destiny. We must all open our hearts and minds and share with each other our Mexicayotl, "the Shining Path of Consciousness." It is this Mexika consciousness that we will carry with us today, from now until forever, until once again we have restored liberty, land, and justice to Aztlan.

We, the Mexika of the 21st Century, will NEVER be defeated again. I say to you: "What a time to be alive! Do you dare to scale the heights of heaven? Of Aztlan? I dare you!"

With great Mexika honor, I take this time to thank you all for making this historical conference possible. What we have witnessed is not a conference of corporations, lobbyists, money, or disharmony. On the contrary, this conference was, is, and always will be one of truth, consciousness, liberation, justice, and eventually, the return of our God-given land, Aztlan.

We have been awakened and surrounded by the spirit of Mexicayotl, the same spirit that enabled our brave ancestors to battle for Aztlan and endure the suffering which they experienced. Aztlan, which means "Land That Has Risen," is the total essence of our self realization today.

We must never forget that we are the indigenous spirits of Cem-Anahuac which means "One World/Americas/Land Surrounded By Water." With that spirit in our souls we will strive in gratitude to our ancestors who fought and died to permit us, today at this conference, the journey into the Birth of the Rising of the Sixth Sun.

History reports that when one nation conquers or invades another nation, the first two elements that must be destroyed are the culture and religion. For 500 years, the same European invaders in this country have attempted to completely destroy our culture. In the process, they also decided to literally take our land. But history also reveals that 500 years ago we were sanctioned with a Mandate on August 13, 1521, that is to be carried out. Today, on August 13, 2000, we accept that Mandate.

You see, Hermanos, they forgot to destroy the writings and oral traditions of those who were there. When our courageous and last Mexika King Cuauhtemoc spoke from his trance as he faced the Sun, he revealed that the Creator had envisioned that Mexikas of all time, that Mexikas of the future, that we here today, are destined to fulfill that Mandate.

"We have lost sight of our Sun, and this has left us quaking in the Shadows," stated Cuauhtemoc. He revealed to us that the Fifth Sun was in the process of ending. For the next 500 years we, the masses, would be lost in the wilderness, afraid to speak out, fighting among ourselves, filled with self hatred, jealousy, and a lack of desire or dignity. He knew that we would suffer with all these problems of humanity. Yet he stated, "We know it will rise again." Yes, he knew that after such suffering and destruction among ourselves we would rise again. He saw that the Sixth Sun would rise again and our visions, our hearts and our minds will be clear, steady, and strong.

The Oppressor has taken our hearts and minds into cold, dark direction, making us feel guilty for our very existence on Mother Earth. Today we declare the Oppressor's direction NULL and VOID. We embrace the Mandate of our Great Mexika King, and no one will EVER push us in a direction that is not for us. No longer will the Oppressor create a guilt in us. No longer will this government say that something is wrong with us.

The Mandate of the Sixth Sun will make our people free against all kinds of "contras." We are no longer Mexican Americans, Latinos, or Hispanics. We are the Mexikas of the Sixth Sun! THE SIXTH SUN HAS RISEN!!!

Brothers and Sisters, we must share with our people here in Aztlan and in the Holy Land (Mexico) that the foundation and regeneration of the concept of "family" must return. Mother Earth, through the spirit of Cuauhtemoc, speaks to us once again, "Fathers and mothers take up again the teaching; the fathers with their sons, and the mothers with their daughters for their descendants who will keep instructing their children."

This present society has destroyed the true core of our families. The respect for and honoring of one's parents has been totally lost through misdirection and experimentation. It is our intention to return that holy concept of "family" to our culture and history. This concept is one of the reasons that we who are here today have been able to resist the destructive forces of the human element.

We must reunite our Mexika families. We must break bread with them once again. We must be patient and loving with them. We must share and embrace the spirit of Mexicayotl with our families.

I must now share with you a Mexika spiritual experience: Recently, I visited with Ramsey Muniz who, was honored with his name Tezcatlipoca, "Smoking Mirror," twenty-five years ago. He is presently incarcerated at the U. S. Penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kansas, serving a life sentence without parole. Tezcatlipoca is a Mexika National Political Prisoner. I know that his spirit is here with us. He constantly states that even though he is confined in the dungeons of the Oppressor, his Mexika soul is free. Be that as it may, during my last visit with him, he stated that in his heart he knew that he would not be present during the total liberation of Aztlan, but like Cuauhtemoc and others, it is his destiny to prepare, organize, and implement the foundation, temples, and pillars of the Sixth Sun.

We have set the stage for our culture and our history. Now we must prepare ourselves to carry out the conclusion of the Mandate we have accepted. We must now politically organize ourselves and our people in order to formulate the political foundation of the Sixth Sun. We will never again lose sight of our culture, as we have in the past and in the present.

You must remember that we can have culture without a political agenda, but, as Mexikas, we can never have a political agenda without our culture. It is a known economic fact that, within the next ten to fifteen years, we as a race will be the majority throughout all Aztlan. Be assured that both the Democratic and Republican parties are preparing how to control our lives, our direction, our families, our destiny, and our freedom. Well, we have news for them. It is never going to happen! We will resist, as we have resisted for the last 500 years. We will resist with a new spirituality of reuniting our people, of rising again, of reaching out, and of fulfilling the great destiny of our race.

It is our intention to return to our communities and share with our people the knowledge that the Sixth Sun has risen. Politically, we will NOT encourage our people to continue to vote for either the Democratic or the Republican Party, for they have committed the most serious crimes against humanity -- discrimination, corruption, poverty, lack of education, and the genocide of our brothers and sisters from the Holy Land (Mexico) who come into Aztlan because the spirits of the land call to them. We must return to our barrios, to our schools, to the colleges and universities, to organize with patience and truth as our ancestors before us have done.

El Sexto Sol will eventually guide and provide the means of having the Oppressor return our lands to us. We must share with our youth, from the time of birth, the truth of our history, our culture, and of our land which was taken from us. This conference, through the suffering and sacrificing of those who came before us, of our Mexika political prisoners, is the means of once again building the temples in Aztlan. This does not mean the actual act of designing grand buildings by cutting, squaring, and setting stone. Building the Temple in Aztlan means to accept Cuauhtemoc's Mandate with our hearts and lives forever. It means to organize our people culturally, historically, politically, and spiritually. It means to share and embrace the consciousness that surrounds us with the enlightenment of honor, pride, love, courage, faith, and strength.

Once again, I thank everyone here today for sharing and embracing the spirits of our ancestors, especially the spiritual Mandate of Cuauhtemoc. In closing, I would like to share with you part of a poem that was written by Tezcatlipoca during his incarceration in Solitary Confinement:
