Agenda set for the Mexicano/Latino Summit on the Immigration Crisis

The agenda for the "Mexicano/Latino Bi-National Summit against the Sensenbrenner Legislation (H.R.4437)", to be held tomorrow Saturday February 11 at the Riverside Convention Center, will include presentations by high level elected political leaders from both sides of the border. The National Alliance for Human Rights (NAHR), one of three sponsoring organizations, also said that they expect hundreds of participants from throughout the Southwest and Mexico representing the organizational, political, labor, student, activist, church, business, professional, academic, and media sectors of the Mexicano/Latino communities.

The primary purpose of the "Summit" at the Riverside Convention Center located at 3443 Orange Street in Riverside, California is to strategically initiate a well-organized and coordinated bi-national movement and campaign to (1) defeat the Sensenbrenner legislation (H.R. 4437) that calls for the construction of a seven-hundred mile iron fence, harsh employer sanctions, criminalization of the undocumented and employers, and a further militarization of the U.S./Mexico border, which is presently being considered by the U.S. Senate; and (2) for immigration reform that includes legalization.

The Summit s action emphasis is reflected on its agenda. Four major breakout sessions will be held to produce concrete actions that seek to pressure the United States Senate to defeat the Sensenbrenner legislation and adopt immigration reform, specifically legalization. The four major breakout sessions are: (1) Bi-National Conventional Lobbying Strategy; (2) Bi-National Protest Direct Action Strategy; (3) Organization Structural Coalescence; and (4) Action Program Financing. The Summit s agenda also calls for a position to be taken on the recent Ilio Carrion shooting incident involving a San Bernardino Sheriff's Deputy.

This historic Summit is being facilitated by the National Alliance for Human Rights (NAHR), a network of individuals and organizations committed to the promotion of human rights, social justice, and political empowerment in collaboration with numerous organizations and leaders from throughout the country and Mexico. It is co-hosted by University of California, MEChA and Chicano Student Programs. The Summit s general schedule is as follows: pre-registration, 8:30 9:30; Summit, starts at 9:30 a.m. and adjourns at 4:00 p.m. The cost for registration is $5.00 for students and $10.00 for adults.

Organizations and individuals have been encouraged to come prepared to submit legislative and direct action proposals. Music, indigenous dancers, a DVD presentation on the 1977 San Isidro Anti-KKK March will highlight the pre-registration hour program from 8:30 to -9:30 a.m. The Mexica-Movement and other organizations will be setting up information booths.

The Summit s program includes political leaders from both the United States and Mexico who will briefly address the Summit. Scheduled are California Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez (D), the Vice-Chair of the Hispanic Congressional Caucus Congressman Joe Baca (D) and from Mexico, PRD Federal Senator Reymundo Cardenas from Zacatecas. Also coming from Mexico are union leaders Eduardo Perez Saucedo, Secretary General of the International Union for Social Security, Raul Garcia Pacheco and Pepe Jacques, Coordinator of the Immigrant Network.
