Brown Berets de Nuevo Mexico to march
against racist inn keeper in Taos
What happens when a Texan buys a hotel in Taos, Nuevo Mexico and then tries to change the native employees first names from Spanish to English? Well, you get chaos in Taos! You get a mini version of Afghanistan where the USA is attempting to do a similar thing. You may even get the Texan kicked out of town.
Juanito Burns - Prime Minister of Los Brown Berets de Nuevo Mexico . This has been exactly the experience of Abilene, Texas based inn keeper Larry Whitten. Larry Whitten, owner of three Whitten Inns in Texas and one in South Carolina, came to Taos recently to buy a fifth inn for 2 million dollars. He promptly ordered his Nuevo Mexicano employees to not speak Spanish in his presence. He also ordered his employees to change their first names to English. For example, he ordered one employee named Marcos to change it to Mark.
Taos is a close knit community of approximately 5,000 residents located at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. A large majority of the native residents are Nuevo Mexicanos that have cherished the Spanish language, culture and traditions throughout the history of the region. This plus the fact that Nuevo Mexico and Texas have had serious historical conflicts related to race and ethnicity resulted in a serious "culture clash" between Larry Whitten and his Nuevo Mexicano employees. The clash has now spread to the entire Taos community, the state and beyond.
Racist inn keeper Larry Whitten. Various national Latino organizations have now come to the aid of the Nuevo Mexicano hotel employees, most who have been terminated by the racist Larry Whitten. There is now a call for all Latinos and friends to boycott the five Whitten Inns which are listed below this article.
In addition, there will be a Civil Rights March in Taos this Saturday November 14, 2009 against the racist Larry Whitten by Los Brown Berets de Nuevo Mexico, MEChA, LULAC, Somos Un Pueblo, ACLU, NAACP, the Black Berets and the community. The march will start at 11:00 AM at 829 Paseo del Pueblo Sur and will proceed to the Whitten Inn at 615 Paseo del Pueblo Sur in Taos. There will be a press conference at 1:300 PM in front of the Whitten Inn.
