Ode to Dolores Huerta
Madre de Dolor
By Phil Goldvarg
. * * *
November 1, 2000 Dolores, mother of pain,
she inhales las lagrimas
of her gente, struggles with the demanding earth,
the greedy gods
of green stone,her hands know
the cold of predawn,
the ice of a nino's death, she confronts the two faces
of growers
and hungry ghosts,Dolores marched y marches
dust roads of danger
y las luchas por vida, her eyes welcome the aguila,
embrace the feathers
of free flight, she soars above acid spray
that settles across the breath
of her familia, she swallows los bastones
of masked chotas,
survival is her heart, she wears a chaleco de orgullo,
lleno con cuentos
y esperanzas,Dolores, madre de dolor,
we join you
in your suffering,we march into su corazon
with prayers y carino
para ti Dolores, para ti.* * *

Phil Goldvarg is a Poet who focuses on La Raza's struggle for self-determination as subject matter for his poems. He has been a subscriber of La Voz de Aztlan since its inception. Mr. Goldvarg wrote this poem on November 1, 2000 for Dolores C. Huerta who is presently in critical condition at Bakersfield Heart Hospital. Dolores Huerta suffered complications after surgery to stop internal bleeding of the aortic artery within her intestines, a condition that may have been caused by a severe beating she received from the cowardly San Francisco cops on September 1988 during a peaceful demonstrations against then president George Bush.
