Horrific Dragging Death
of Mexican Migrant

Four Other Migrants Attacked in North San Diego County

San Diego, California (July 7, 2000) - La Voz de Aztlan has learned that Mexican migrant farmworkers found the battered body of another worker this past Sunday in a ravine near the intersection of Black Mountain and Carmel Valley Roads in northern San Diego County and within the city limits of San Diego. San Diego police detective Dave Cohen confirmed that the undocumented worker was beaten about the head and dragged on his face along the roadway. The yet unidentified victim was approximately 25 years old and was wearing working boots and blue jeans.

On Wednesday July 5 in the same area on Black Mountain Road a carload of white thugs attacked four Mexican migrants and shot them with high power pellet guns while the migrants were running for their lives. Two of the migrants had to undergo surgery to removed pellets imbedded in their flesh.

The area where the two incidents occurred two days apart has a long history of Neo-Nazi Skinhead attacks on Mexican migrant workers. It is also an area where the White Aryan Resistance (W.A.R) has been active over the years. Prior incidents involved beatings but as far as we know this is the first time that a Mexican migrant worker has met such a gruesome death.

Border violence against Mexican migrant workers is now escalating to extreme levels in California, Arizona and Texas. La Voz de Aztlan has reported on a similar incident where a group of five Mexican migrants came under lethal attack by two Anglos on horseback with high power hunting rifles near Sasabe, Arizona. Also we reported on the murder of yet another Mexican migrant by a vigilante rancher in Texas. The migrant in this case was looking for water on the vigilante's ranch and he shot him. He held the injured migrant for the US Border Patrol but the migrant bled to death before he could be given medical attention.

Like other murders of Mexican migrant workers, this incident is being given very little publicity by the mainstream media. This is in contrast to the media coverage given to the dragging death of Afro-American James Byrd on June 7, 1999 near Jasper, Texas by white supremacists.

Perhaps with the new government in Mexico, to be installed, this situation will change. President elect Vicente Fox spoke strongly yesterday that his government will not tolerate the types of human right abuses occurring against its nationals along the 2000 mile border region.
