Estimada Raza de Aztlan:This article has been removed for the following reasons. On April 5, 2001 La Voz de Aztlan received a blind copy e-mail from the following person:
Ruben Martinez
Author, "The Other Side: Notes from New L.A., Mexico City & Beyond"
Lecturer, University of California, Santa Barbara
Lecturer, Claremont McKenna College The e-mail principal recipient was a Professor Debra Weber of UC Riverside. It was a response to an "alert" by Professor Weber concerning our website. We are publishing the first paragraph of this e-mail because Martinez is referring to Professor Ayon's article that was previously published here.***********************
"Dear Devra:
I received your extremely troubling email yesterday-- thank you for sending it along. I checked the "Voz de Aztlan" website and was truly stunned at the hateful, homophobic tenor of the site. It is also racist, tainting the articles by such scholars as David Ayon (who I just spoke to and who told me, of course, that his article was lifted from the Times without his permission). I wonder if you know much about the group of people who publish the site? Please let me know if you do, I am considering writing about this. "

On April 18, 2001, we received a request from the Los Angeles Times to remove the article. We believe that Martinez was responsible for this. We think, but are not sure, that this maricon went and told the Los Angeles Times that we had Professor Davis Ayon's article published on our website. The article was first published in the LA Times but since it was a guest article, we thought it would be OK to publish it also.
Hasta La Victoria Siempre,
La Voz de Aztlan
