Mexican-American voters were the
targets of GOP intimidation letter

Los Angeles, Alta California - October 23, 2006 - (ACN) La Voz de Aztlan has received and has published a copy of the sham Spanish language letter that was sent to mostly Mexican-American voters in the 47th Congressional District of California. The wording of the letter clearly intends to deter recently naturalized citizens of Mexican descent from voting in next month's elections.

The first sentence of the third paragraph says, "No como en Mexico, aqui no se aporta ningun incentivo para votar." This sentence translates as, "Unlike in Mexico, here no incentive is given to vote." The letter's reference to Mexico clearly indicates that the letter was directed to newly naturalized Mexican-American voters. There are tens of thousands of Mexican-American voters in this category in the 47th Congressional District which is mostly comprised of the cities of Santa Ana, Anaheim and Garden Grove.

The State Attorney General and FBI investigations of the Republican Party intimidation letter have entered their final phases. Last Wednesday, six agents of the California Department of Justice raided the campaign headquarters and home of 47th Congressional District candidate Tan Nguyen and arrests are expected soon . The investigation has led to a business, Mailing Pros, that mailed the letters from Huntington Beach, California. Nguyen told investigators that he did not know and had nothing to do with mailing the letter and blamed the incident on a former campaign worker who was ""fired". The owner of Mailing Pros, however, is saying that Nguyen kept calling his business in an attempt to expedite the mailing.

Still not clear is Tan Nguyen's direct connection to the California Coalition for Immigration Reform (CCIR). The intimidation letter was mailed in the name of CCIR and had their return address in Huntington Beach. Also, Tan Nguyen was a featured speaker at a CCIR meeting last year. The following is a press release of the event:

California Coalition for Immigration Reform (CCIR) Meeting
Women's Club, 9501 Chapman Avenue (at Gilbert)
Garden Grove, California
Wednesday, October 26, 2005 7:30 P.M.
Admission: $5 (free for CCIR members)

Guest Speaker: Tan Nguyen, California 47th District Republican Congressional candidate challenging Democrat Loretta Sanchez.

Mr. Nguyen is a proud Vietnamese naturalized American citizen whose father had been imprisoned for attempting to escape the brutal Communist regime, but determined to save their lives, this man was only 8 years old when his father put the family in a small boat. After a long and dangerous journey, they legally came to America. He worked his way through college, first U.C.L.A., then graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Baccalaureate degree, has been an Investment Advisor for American Express, A.G. Edwards and now works as an Independent Investor Advisor.

This is a man who believes in America as a "nation of law", has made a commitment to uphold and defend our Constitutional rights and freedoms, has courageously publicly praised the Minuteman Project and publicly opposed any illegal alien "guest-worker" program or amnesty... The above location was the scene of a violent CCIR and Minutemen event last year. Please refer to "Serious violence erupts at Minutemen James Gilchrist event" at http://www.aztlan.net/minutemen_event_violence.htm The CCIR has denied any involvement in the sending of the letter but they have also been investigated concerning similar activities. CCIR, founder, Barbara Coe has referred to Mexican immigrants as "savages" and "illegal barbarians who are cutting off heads and appendages of blind, white, disabled gringos."

The Mexican-American community hopes that the final report by the State Attorney General and the FBI answers the following questions:

1. Who is the campaign worker of Tan Nguyen that allegedly sent the letter?

2. Who is the letter's signer "Sergio Ramirez"?

3. Is there any connection between CCIR and Tan Nguyen and if not, will there be legal prosecution for falsifying CCIR's letterhead?

4. Is there a business relationship between CCIR and Mailing Pros of Huntington Beach?

5. Who paid Mailing Pros of Huntington Beach for the mailing?

La Voz de Aztlan regrets and is saddened that an "immigrant" from Vietnam is implicated in an act to deny Mexican-Americans the right to vote. Many soldiers of Mexican descent gave their lives in the jungles of Vietnam and many of our young people here were imprisoned protesting the "killing" of innocent Vietnamese civilians in the unjust war.
