Huelga (Strike) for Friday Gets Wide Support

"La Huelga" scheduled for this Friday December 12 has gathered widespread support, especially in California where Mexicans, Mexican-Americans and other Latinos make up 45% of the labor force. It is also in California where Mexican and other immigrants are getting hit the hardest by the new Republican Governor Schwarzenegger administration, a problem that the one day strike and economic boycott seeks to address.

The one day "work stoppage" has the support of organized labor and a multitude of human, civil and other organizations. The strike, one of many planned for the future, is expected to be extremely effective in sending a strong message to those who rule the USA that Mexican and other immigrants will not stand idly while their most basic human rights are trampled on by xenophobes, violent vigilantes and bigots. The organizers of "La Huelga" which includes the National Huelga Committee, Hermandad Mexicana Nacional, the Mexican American Political Association and Hispanos Unidos are asking for all supporters to not go to work, not send their children to school and not buy any products or services this Friday December 12, 2003.

It is hoped that the immigrant worker solidarity movement, now strongest in Alta California, will spread to other parts of Aztlan and joined by other national struggles here and throughout the USA. The National Huelga Committee expects that if anti-immigrant violence escalates, that the "Huelga Solidarity Movement" will gain momentum.
