Lock and Load
with Live Ammunition

The Kent University students had planned a peacefull rally at noon at The Commons when soldiers began to assemble around 11:30 A.M. near the campus ROTC building. The field commander, Brigadier General Robert Canterbury (standing in civilian clothes), told the soldiers before the confrontation began, "These students are going to have to find out what law and order is all about."

Soon after, the soldiers were told to "lock and load" their weapons with live ammunition. Many of the soldiers also placed their bayonets on their rifles
