Minuteman "Maces" parishioner at St. Peter's Catholic Church
It appears that certain of the Minutemen vigilantes do not have respect for Catholic Churches. Yesterday, a Minuteman "Maced" a Catholic parishioner at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fallbrook, California located on the eastern edge of the US Marine base of Camp Pendleton. As a married couple drove onto the church's driveway, a Minuteman with a camera confronted them and the husband confiscated his camera. The Minuteman became angry, took out a can of Mace and sprayed the Catholic parishioner in the face.
The San Diego Minutemen have been demonstrating in front of St. Peter's Catholic Church for many days now because the church is helping Mexican day laborers. There have now been many heated confrontations and the pastor of the church worries that the violence may escalate. Two days ago the National Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights condemned the San Diego Minutemen for harassing the church.
“The Catholic League is calling upon non-Latino Catholics in Southern California to join with Latino Catholics to condemn the flagrant anti-Catholic bigotry of the San Diego Minutemen,” Catholic League president Bill Donohue said in a statement. “Regardless of whether one is sympathetic or not to the plight of undocumented immigrants – and/or the grievances of legal immigrants – there is one issue that all fair-minded persons should be able to agree upon: there is no role for bigotry in this dispute”, he added.
