La Voz de AztlanLos Angeles, Alta California - August 31, 2005 - (ACN) The recently elected Los Angeles mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa, is facing his first major challenge. At issue is how to deal with the historically corrupt and brutal Los Angeles Police Department and their recent out of control behavior against both the Black and Latino communities that may, again, result in major riots and social unrest in the City of Angels.
The thorny problem facing Mayor Villaraigosa today has its roots in the "LAPD Rampart Corruption Scandal" that occurred in the years 1997 through 2001. The scandal involved a significant number of LAPD officers taking part in bank robberies, stealing and distributing cocaine and framing anyone who stood in their way. One notorious case involved the shooting and framing of a young Latino by the name of Javier Ovando. The youth was left paralyzed as a result of the incident. In the largest police misconduct settlement in the city's history, Javier Ovando was awarded $15 million dollars. An additional 156 civil suits arising out of the scandal were settled by the city and the victims for more than $150 million dollars.
With the savage beating of Rodney King by LA cops, and subsequent "LA Riots of 1992", still fresh in the mind, the "LAPD Rampart Corruption Scandal" outraged Angelinos. This resulted in strong political pressure on the city council and the mayor's office for LAPD reform. After three police chiefs come and gone, since the Rodney King beating, the city placed its bet on a transplant from New York City. On October 2002, then Mayor James Hahn appointed the 54th chief of the LAPD William J. Bratton. Policing in Los Angeles has now gone from bad to worse.
Last summer, LAPD cops were videotaped savagely beating unarmed motorist Stanley Miller with a flashlight and earlier this year the cops murdered a 13-year-old youth named Devin Brown. Both Stanley Miller and Devin Brown were Black.
This is not all. Last month, they killed 18-month old Suzie Peña who was in the arms of her 34 year old father Joe Raul Peña. The father and his baby came down in a hail of 60 bullets. Little Suzie Peña, an adorable angel, was hit twice according to the coroner, once on her head and another on her leg. Worst of all, Police Chief William Bratton came on both radio and television making a series of insensitive comments that angered the community. One statement he made was that the body of the 18 month old baby had tested positive for cocaine.
Now, LA cops have assaulted a respected leader in the Black community, Minister Tony Muhammad of the Nation of Islam. At a press conference the following day, Minister Tony Muhammad, with his lip and left eye swollen from the beating, said, “My head is bloodied, but it’s unbowed.” The assault by LAPD cops took place on August 25, as Muhammad was ministering to a bereaved family that had lost a son to gang violence. Yesterday, members of the Nation of Islam called for Mayor Villaraigosa to fire Police Chief Bratton. This news publication agrees, and requests that the mayor form a citizen's committee to search for a new police chief. La Voz de Aztlan agrees with Minister Tony Muhammad when he says that the "LAPD has been the source, if not the direct cause, of every major civil disturbance in Los Angeles since the 1930's, from the 1942 Zoot Suit Riots in East Los Angeles, to the 1962 attack on the Nation of Islam Mosque on Central, to the 1965 Watts Riots, to the 1992 Rebellion, and now to the attack on a Muslim Minister. . ."
It is the opinion of this writer that Black Muslims in Los Angeles will suffer more police attacks if Chief Bratton, a known Islamophobe, remains in charge. The connections of Bratton to Muslim hating Zionists are clear. A few weeks ago, his wife Rikki Klieman filled in for an obnoxious radio talk jock on a local LA radio station. Rikki Klieman made it clear that she was best of friends to the regular host Bill Handel. Bill Handel was the source of a degrading skit that resulted in an apology by the radio station after The Council on American-Islamic Relations made a formal complaint to the FCC. La Voz de Aztlan has published the skit at http://www.aztlan.net/jew_bill_handel.htm Also Bill Handel said over the airwaves that LA cops "should have parked a flashlight up the anus of Stanley Miller", the Black man that was chased and savagely beaten by the police and mentioned above.
