Vigilante murderers of Mexican mother and daughter remain at large
The savage clubbing to death, on a street in Fremont, California, of 39 year old Maria Esperanza Hernandez and of her 19 year old daughter Maria del Carmen Castillo Hernandez on February 1, 2004 remains "under investigation" says Police Chief Craig Steckler. The predominantly White police department has apparently run out of leads. Two weeks ago they issued a plea to the public for assistance in solving the murders. The situation has led 24 year old Esteban P. Gutierrez of Fremont to ask "are the white cops in charge of the investigation just dragging their feet?" Francisco Mendoza, 45 years old, added, "I don't think this would be the situation if a witness had seen a Black man doing the same to an Anglo mother and daughter!"
Mexican undocumented immigrants who suffer these fates do not receive justice, even from elected representatives like State Senator Gil Cedillo. Senator Cedillo has apparently been exploiting the heinous murders of the defenseless Mexican women to push for his driver's license agreement, for undocumented workers, with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Senator Gil Cedillo has been rallying at the site of the murders almost on a weekly basis and leading chants such as "What do we want?" "Licenses." "When do we want them?" "Now!"
Senator Gil Cedillo set up a group called "Voluntarios de la Comunidad" who pretend to care for justice for the murdered women but whose real motive is actually to push for driver's licenses. La Voz de Aztlan called two representatives of "Voluntarios de la Comunidad" and neither wanted to speak about the murders nor about the lack of diligence to investigate them by the Fremont Police Department. A call to the Sacramento office of State Senator Gil Cedillo resulted in an even bigger disappointment. The last thing we heard before his Chief of Staff hung up was "Why don't you call the Fremont Police Department?" Catch - 22!
