NOTE: Below is one of the very few newspaper articles that was published in Mexico City concerning the pressumed attempted terrorist attack on the Mexican Congress by two Israeli agents on Wednesday October 10, 2001. The article is by Mexican journalist Rubén Vázquez Pérez that was published in the Mexico City daily Uno mas Uno on October 11. Octubre 11, 2001Con una pistola nueve milímetros, una granada, al parecer de manufactura artesanal, tres cargadores y un portafolios con artículos eléctricos, fueron detenidos ayer dos individuos en el Palacio Legislativo de San Lázaro, el mexicano Salvador Gerson y el israelí Sar Ben Zui, quienes lograron penetrar al inmueble y sólo fueron detectados por la actitud sospechosa que mostraron, según apreciaron algunos de los manifestantes cañeros que dentro del recinto parlamentario se mantienen en plantón desde hace días.
Los hechos ocurrieron alrededor de las 17 horas, cuando los propios cañeros los detectaron y registraron y descubrieron que ambos traían armas. Los manifestantes relataron que se les hizo extraño que Gerson y Ben Zui estuvieran tomando fotografías de su plantón y del interior del inmueble.
El jefe de seguridad del recinto parlamentario, Salvador Alarcón, confirmó la versión y agregó que Gerson y Ben Zui llevaban un portafolios en cuyo interior había cables de electricidad. Ambos fueron remitidos inmediatamente al área de resguardo de la cámara.
En sus primeras declaraciones, los detenidos admitieron haber llegado al recinto legislativo para ofrecer servicios de seguridad; pero no precisaron si tenían una cita con algún funcionario de la cámara ni señalaron el nombre o el cargo de la persona con la que presuntamente negociarían. Ninguno de los dos explicó cómo pasaron los arcos de detección de metales, instalados en los diferentes accesos del edificio.
Alarcón relató que al momento de su detención, los sospechosos no opusieron resistencia y al ser interrogados dijeron que trabajan para una empresa privada de seguridad, Desarrollo de Sistemas de Seguridad Privada, lo cual, añadió, no pudieron comprobar a satisfacción. Aseguró que el departamento jurídico del organismo camaral los pondrá a disposición de la autoridad judicial competente.
Agregó que cuando se les registró les fueron decomisadas las armas. El funcionario admitió que fueron burlados los procedimientos y mecanismos habituales de seguridad del edificio, no así la actitud vigilante del personal encargado de garantizar la seguridad.
Vamos a determinar cómo entraron y qué hacían aquí en la cámara. Estamos investigando, dijo en breve entrevista. Otras versiones refieren que los presuntos terroristas llevaban en el portafolios un muestrario de los productos que intentaban vender a la Cámara de Diputados. Ambos son judíos, aunque uno de los dos es mexicano y el otro israelí, determinó el departamento de seguridad de la cámara.
Por la noche llegó al recinto legislativo de San Lázaro personal de la PGR y del Ministerio Público Federal para realizar las primeras indagatorias, de las que se desprendió que Gerson es mexicano por naturalización, y presunto dueño de la mencionada empresa de seguridad. Se informó que es un militar en retiro de las fuerzas especiales del ejército de Israel, con el grado de coronel.
Mientras tanto, en la PGR dieron a conocer que alrededor de las 21 horas los detenidos fueron trasladados del Palacio Legislativo de San Lázaro a la delegación de esta dependencia en el Distrito Federal, en Vallarta y Plaza de la República, para el inicio de las investigaciones sobre la identidad de los detenidos.

October 11, 2001With 9mm handguns, one hand grenade, three ammunition clips and one briefcase with electronic components, two individuals were arrested yesterday in the Palacio Legislativo de San Lazaro (Mexican Congress). The Mexican Salavador Gerson (Translator's note: The PGR or the Mexican Department of Justice spells this individual's name as Salvador Guersson Smecke and identifies him as a retired colonel of the Israeli Defense Forces) and the Israeli Sar Ben Zui(Translator's note: The PGR spells this individual's name as Saur Ben Zvi and determines that he is an Israeli citizen illegally in Mexico) managed to penetrate security and were detected only because of their suspicious behavior said a group of sugar industry demonstrators that have been protesting in the hall of the Congress for several days.
The incident occurred around 1700 hours when the sugar industry workers found out that both were armed. The sugar industry protestors found it odd that both were taking photographs of the interior of the Mexican Congress.
The Chief of Congressional Security, Salvador Alarcón, confirmed this account and added that Gerson and Ben Zui where carrying briefcases with electrical wiring. Both were taken and detained inside a security holding cell.
In their preliminary declarations, the two suspects said that they were inside the congress to offer security services but they failed to say with whom they had an appointment with. Neither of the suspects explained how they were able to go through the metal detectors that are installed at all entrances to the congressional building.
Alarcón related that the suspects did not offer resistance during their arrest and that in their interrogation they said that they worked for a private security firm named "Desarrollo de Sistemas de Seguridad Privada (Private Security Systems Development) but that they were unable to provide any proof. Alarcon gave assurances that the suspects would be turned over to appropriate law enforcement authorities.
Security Chief Alarcon added that they confiscated their arms. The official admitted that the suspects had embarrassed those in charge of parliamentary security and their intrusion detection system.
Alarcon said that they are investigating what they were doing inside and how they were able to enter without being detected. Both are Jews but one has legal Mexican immigration status said congressional security investigators.
During the evening, various officers of the PGR (Mexican Department of Justice) and of the Federal District Police arrived to conduct an investigation. Preliminary findings were that Gerson was a naturalized Mexican immigrant and a former colonel in the Israeli Armed Forces.
