US soldier deaths mount in Iraq as a third naval carrier is sent to Iran
Fourteen U.S. occupation soldiers have been killed in Iraq in the last 48 hours. Total US soldiers killed to date is 3,545 and 25,830 wounded. The number of US casualties as well as the number of casualties suffered by the US trained Iraqi army have been rapidly rising casting serious doubt on the effectiveness of the "military surge" that dramatically increased the number of US soldiers deployed in Iraq.
Meanwhile, military sources are reporting that there is a significant escalation of the US naval build-up off the shores of Iran as a result of rising military tensions in the Middle East. The Pentagon has announced that the USS Enterprise, the US Navy’s largest aircraft carrier, will join the USS Stennis and the USS Nimitz in the largest concentration of naval power the United States has ever deployed opposite Iran. Vice President Dick Cheney may soon be sending a fourth carrier to the region to make good a promise he made to Israel.
One June 10, pro-Israel Senator Joe Lieberman said on "Face the Nation" of CBS News that the USA should launch a military air, naval and ground attack on Iran. Senator Lieberman has been having frequent meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. The Israeli Prime Minister also had a long and extensive meeting with President George Bush in the White House on June 19. Topics discussed at the Oval Office included military options against Iran and the Hamas recent takeover of the Palestinian Gaza territory.
